I saved the following response from Charlie Brett (HP Ft. Collins)
posted after a similar question:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-Sorry, but if you have the DB-9 female connector on the back of you 300,
it is not the same pinouts used on a PC. There is a cable (I thought was
shipped with all the systems) that connects to the 9 pin and gives you a
DB-25 female connector. It is wired for DTE and the HP part number is
98561-61604.
For those of you who want to know the pinout for the 9 pin
built-in RS-232 connector on the 320, 330, 350, ... Human Interface,
here are the connections:
Pin Number Equivalent Pin Number Signal
on 9 Pin Conn. on 25 Pin Connector Name
1 20 Data Terminal Ready
2 2 Transmit Data
3 3 Received Data
4 4 Request To Send
5 5 Clear To Send
6 6 Data Set Ready
7 7 Signal Ground
8 8 Carrier Detect
9 22 Ring Indicator
Outer Shell 1 Physical Ground
The pinout for the 345/375/700 is the same as a PC. They are:
Pin Number Equivalent Pin Number Signal
on 9 Pin Conn. on 25 Pin Connector Name
1 8 Carrier Detect
2 3 Received Data
3 2 Transmit Data
4 20 Data Terminal Ready
5 7 Signal Ground
6 6 Data Set Ready
7 4 Request To Send
8 5 Clear To Send
9 22 Ring Indicator
Outer Shell 1 Physical Ground
Note: There is an adapter that will convert the "new" PC style
connector to the the "old" Series 300 style. The HP part number
is 98574-61606.
